US Maryland announces US$2.2-million shellfish aquaculture loan plan

US$2.2 million in loans will be made available for Maryland's aquaculture projects through the state's US$10.6 million oyster restoration budget for fiscal year 2011, said Governor Martin O'Malley.

Maryland's oyster restoration plan increases areas open to leasing for oyster aquaculture as well as increasing the amount of bay bottom set aside as sanctuaries.

The Department of Natural Resources says demand is expected to exceed the money available so priority will be given to applicants who plan to begin operations in 2011. Applicants who plan to begin operations in 2011 must have a DNR shellfish aquaculture lease, or have applied for a lease, by November 15.
