Bulgaria to expand poultry sales to EU by 25 percent

Bulgaria's poultry sales in the EU is expected to rise 25 percent to 12,000 tonnes in 2007 from 9,000 tonnes in 2006, according to Boris Stoimenov, chair of the union of Bulgarian poultry breeders.

Local producers are switching to processed poultry products from raw poultry exports previously in order to cater to rising EU demand. Sales to Greece, Britain and France have risen this year.

Raw poultry and goose liver will make up 9,000 tonnes of the exports and smoked meat would hit 3,000 tonnes in 2007.

More than 12 poultry slaughterhouses of the 50 in the country are cleared for export to the EU.
