Danish pig slaughter declines over past six years

The number of pigs slaughtered in Denmark over the past six years has dropped by 3.5 million despite the fact that pig production is higher than ever before. The decline is attributed to rising pig exports.

According to Danish slaughter-house company Tican's MD Ove Thejls, there is a strong consolidation under way in the Danish market, which causes a strong demand for pigs.

Thejls expects farm-gate prices for pigs to drop from the present DKK8.60 (US$1.73) to DKK8.30 shortly. The price a week ago was DKK8.80.

US$1 = DKK4.988 (Oct 21)
