Chicken, Egg Prices in Singapore Remain Above Pre-ban Levels
The prices of chickens and eggs in Singapore have not returned to pre-ban levels despite imports from Malaysian states Johor and Malacca.
Singapore had imposed a poultry ban on Malaysia after bird flu was detected in Kelantan on August 17.
During the six-week ban, the chicken prices increased 50 percent to $7 a kilogram, while eggs shot up 250 percent to 55 cents apiece.
Since the ban was partially lifted, the average price of chickens has dropped to $5 a kilogram. But this is still 12 percent more than the cost before the ban.
Meanwhile, the price of eggs has dropped to 26 cents each. However the price remains 66 percent more than pre-ban levels.
