Market analysis

Hog market weakened further during and after the October long holidays. Climbing from the previous week's low of 8,010 tonnes, pork carcass volumes increased 3.7% during the second week of the month to 8,302 tonnes. With supplies expanding and demand sluggish, pork carcass prices dipped 1.5% RMb22.83/kg.

Over the past two weeks, hog prices tumbled 6% to RMB16.42/kg on average.

Market forecast

Due to poor performance of the hog market, breeder farms have held sow population flat during September. With the inventories of finishing hog diminished due to earlier high releases, and the production of piglet poised to remain low, hog prices should stabilise gradually in the coming period.
