GIA reports global fresh meat market to reach 300 million tonnes by 2015
GIA has announced the release of a comprehensive global report on Meat (Fresh and Processed) markets, where the global market for fresh meat is forecasted to reach 300 million tonnes by 2015.
Key factors fuelling market growth include ever-growing population, increasing urbanization, and recovery of major markets from the attack of dreadful diseases such as avian influenza and bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). The market is also driven by the growing consumption of meat in Asia-Pacific market, backed by the global economic growth and increase in disposable incomes.
Worldwide, a significant portion of the global meat trade is concentrated in few major markets. Expansion of meat market mainly depends upon urbanization. Low transportation costs and improved distribution system are influential in driving meat demand. Supply of meat to consumers through retail outlets is another key demand driver. Mushrooming hypermarkets and supermarkets are increasing meat retailing, which in turn is increasing demand.
Highly developed slaughter facilities, improved disease control measures, better management policies, and improved genetics resulting in better meat are the other key factors.
In terms of consumption, Asia-Pacific constitutes the largest as well as fastest growing regional market for Fresh Meat, as stated by the new market research report on Meats (Fresh and Processed). Though vegetarianism is the current fad in the West, the Asian market, where the green revolution began, is turning to meat. Rising tendencies to ape the West and increasing disposable income are the two major factors influencing this trend.
Europe and North America follows Asia-Pacific as the next largest consumers of meat worldwide. Outbreak of diseases such as avian flu, foot and mouth disease, and bovine spongiform encephalopathy in recent years has badly impacted the growth of global meat market. A fear of contamination has, therefore, compelled major markets to ban imports of poultry products.
Nevertheless, with the recovery of major markets from the attack of dreadful diseases, the overall production of fresh meat is expected to rise through the expansion in pig meat and poultry segment in 2010. However, herd rebuilding would restrict the ovine and bovine production. No growth is expected in the exports of meat across the globe in the year 2010, while imports are expected to post a nominal recovery. Low supplies in the market are expected to restrict the trade growth in sheep and bovine meat in the short term.
Production-wise, leading cattle producing countries globally include India, the US, Brazil, Argentina, and China. Major producers of swine include Brazil, the US, and Germany. Leading meat importing countries include the US, UK, Japan and Germany. Major meat exporters include Argentina, Australia, Denmark, and the Netherlands. Amongst the different meat types, pork represents the most widely consumed meat, followed by poultry, and beef & veal.
