Pioneer offers 20 new soy varieties for 2007

About 20 new soy varieties would be added to Pioneer Hi-Bred International's lineup for 2007.

The new Pioneer brand soy varieties would offer growers protection against yield-robbing pests like soy cyst nematode (SCN), phytophthora root rot, sudden death syndrome (SDS) and brown stem rot (BSR).

Apart from boosting yields, the new varieties would also provide agronomic stability and pest resistance in a single package.

Nineteen of the new Pioneer soy varieties contain the Roundup Ready gene and would offer impressive performance and yield protection.

New Pioneer variety 91M61 would offer a combination of SCN resistance and Rps1k and Rps 6 phytophthora resistance. It could also be applied to soil prone to iron chlorosis. This variety also has been found to be high-yielding in fields without SCN.

Early-Group II variety 92M02 would offer Rps1k phytophthora resistance, high yield and harvest standability. This variety would provide additional strength to the Pioneer offering in this maturity group.

Another variety called 92M33, which is SCN resistant, yielded well in fields with or without SCN. However, it should be kept away from soils with iron chlorosis.

New Pioneer variety 92M75 was different from other SCN-resistant varieties in that it uses Peking as the source of SCN resistance.

More Midwest growers had access to Peking as well the PI 88788 source -- which had been the predominate source of resistance in most Midwest varieties, noted Schafer. He clarified Pioneer was the only company offering high-yielding varieties with Peking resistance. The variety 92M75 would help soy growers fight SCN. It could be planted in fields where varieties with PI 88788 as the SCN source had begun to provide less-than-adequate SCN protection.

A combination of SCN and Rps1k phytophthora resistance would be available in variety 93M13.

For BSR resistance, one could try 93M82, which performs well in drought soils and tough conditions.

Featuring good resistance to BSR and SDS, along with Rps1k phytophthora and SCN resistance, would be 93M95. It would give a good height and standability to the plant.

Variety 97M50 would go well in the south-east. With SCN resistance, it would provide great agronomics and high yield potential, the company said.
