Philippine hog weekly: Typhoons further weaken hog prices (week ended Oct 10, 2011)

an eFeedLink Exclusive

Price summary

Philippine farmgate hog prices continued to fall, as traders blamed the series of typhoons in the last two weeks.

Typhoon Ramon (international name Banyan) was the latest cyclone to have hit the country, this time devastating the regions of Visayas and Mindanao. Although weaker than its predecessors Pedring (Nesat) and Quiel (Nalgae), Ramon still resulted in casualties in the provinces.

Prices have not picked up, despite the expected surge in the fourth quarter, due to continuous rains brought about by the La Niña phenomenon which began early this year. Traders are still hopeful that prices will recover next month in time for the Christmas season.

Market Analysis

Farmers are beginning to worry about the continuous decline of hog prices, which had been expected to pick up last month due to the holiday season demand.

Apart from the weather disturbances, reports say the abundance of smuggled pork imports have hampered prices. Some commercial farms are reported to have closed down due to cheaper pork imports.

Although the government has vowed to curb illegal and legal imports, observers say illegal trading has prospered due to the Christmas season demand. Industry players are concerned that the sector would be severely affected by the twin negative effects of weather aberrations and smuggling, if no interventions are immediately done.
