Philippine Feed Weekly: Feed prices remain unmoved amid typhoons (week ended Sep 29, 2011)

An eFeedLink exclusive

Price summary

Prices of feed grains remained unchanged amid the havoc brought about by twin typhoons over the week.

Typhoons Pedring (international name Nesat) and Quiel (Nalgae) hit the country almost on the same week, devastating Metro Manila and provinces in Northern Luzon. Agricultural losses are expected to reach a record of PHP2 billion (US$46.10 million).

Despite this, feed prices were not affected by the typhoons, even as prices of farmgate hogs fell.

Observers are uncertain of feed price trends in the coming weeks, although an improvement is likely due to surge in demand for the holiday season.

Market Analysis

Meanwhile, authorities are considering imports of corn and feed wheat after the devastation brought by the typhoons.

According to the Department of Agriculture, the Philippines did not import any corn this year, but it bought one million tonnes of wheat from Australia.

Norman Ramos of the Philippine Association of Feed Millers Incorporated said the sector is concerned about the quality of local corn, and may need to import the grain, as well as wheat, if necessary.

This would translate to higher feed costs, as feed prices are now high in the world markets.  Traders believe that once corn and wheat imports arrive, production costs would be higher, thus hiking meat prices in the local market.
