Danish Crown linked to salmonella case
The salmonella case that killed six people and sickened more than 1,000 others since the beginning of 2008 has been traced to a Danish Crown establishment.
The bacterium was traced to Danish Crown's slaughterhouse in Horsens, Jutland. Danish Crown's controls discovered the salmonella strain U292 in a large consignment of pork that was ready to be exported to Sweden and Finland.
The strain had only been found in pork that had already caused illnesses in people.
Kim Vvandrup Sigsgaard of the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration said finding the bacteria at the slaughterhouse is vital to determining its source, as he did not believe all reported cases of salmonella came from this source.
