Poultry prices surge in Pakistan due to low production, high demand

The price of poultry products in Pakistan has soared sharply during the month of Ramadan as the period of low production and high consumption sets in.

The prices of poultry products are expected to remain high during the next two months as production has fallen 25 to 30 percent while consumption has increased 40 percent, market sources said.

The retail price of poultry meat has increased to Rs165/kg (US$2.71) from Rs140/kg (US$2.3) within the last three weeks and the prices of eggs saw a similar hike.

As prices rose, people are cutting back on their poultry purchases, retailers said.
