Japan's beef consumption increases in August
Japan consumed 66,162 tonnes (boneless equivalent) of beef in August, up 3% year-on-year, according to figures released by Agriculture and Livestock Industries Corporation of Japan.
While imported beef consumption in August remained on par with the same period last year at 36,559 tonnes (74 tonnes less than 12 months ago), Japanese domestic beef consumption grew by 7% year-on-year, to 29,603 tonnes (8% higher than the five-year average).
Reportedly there was a significant reduction in frozen Japanese beef stocks during the month of August, which contributed to the higher consumption level.
For January to August, beef consumption volumes totaled 541,702 tonnes, down 1% compared with the same period last year.
