Brazilian beef exports to EU up 60 percent

The Brazilian Agriculture Ministry (MAPA) reported that fresh beef exports to the European Union grew by 60 percent in the third quarter of 2009 in volume and by 54 percent in revenue against the second quarter, to 13,330 tonnes and US$92.12 million over 8,300 tonnes and US$59.84 million, respectively.

Compared to the third quarter of 2008, volume and revenue rose by 400 percent and 300 percent, respectively. According to MAPA, the increase is due to a gradual resumption in beef exports to the EU following the lifting of a ban placed in February 2008.

Year-to-date and in the year ended September 2009, beef exports to the EU reached 30,100 tonnes and 36,200 tonnes, respectively, and MAPA expects this year's result to exceed 2008.
