Thai farmers order UK breeding pigs worth GBP45,000

Thai farmers have made an order of GBP45,000 from a UK pig breeding company ACMC.

ACMC chairman Stephen Curtis said that these farmers would be using the import of 68 boars and gilts, including 40 ultra-prolific Meidam grandparent females, to completely re-populate one of their own herds.

The animals are due to be flown to Bangkok by this year.

The developing Thai pig industry has 800,000 sows and produces 16 million slaughter pigs annually. 10 integrated companies do about 50 percent of the production, while medium-to-large farms do another 35 percent. A final 15 percent of the production is classified as backyard production.
