Philippine hog weekly: Twin typhoons drag down farmgate hog prices (week ended Oct 3, 2011)

An eFeedLink Exclusive

Price summary

Prices of Philippine farmgate hog prices continue to fall due to twin typhoons that devastated Luzon last week.

Cyclones Pedring (international name Nesat) and Quiel (Nalgae) demolished Metro Manila and the Luzon region with powerful winds and severe floods.

The two cyclones crippled the hog trade over the week, which further pulled down prices, according to observers.

Traders say prices may not improve in the coming week, as another typhoon is expected to pound the country this week, hitting the Visayas and Mindanao regions.

Market Analysis

According to experts, Pedring and Quiel were the worst cyclones that hit the country in recent years, flooding areas that had not been previously affected by storms such as Tarlac and Bulacan.

The latest reports place damages caused by the typhoons at PHP1.99 billion, the biggest loss recorded for agriculture so far.

Northern Luzon is among the major hog producers in the country, and traders believe that production for the fourth quarter until the first few months of 2012 will be affected.  However, traders believe that prices and output are expected to recover by next month, barring new typhoons and other weather disturbances, due to the Christmas season demand.
