Thailand rejects sales of farmland to foreign countries

Thailand has rejected Qatar's approaches for the purchase of local agricultural land, as it looks to safeguard its food security.

The Thai Ambassador in Doha, Suvat Chirapant, said a joint venture between Qatar and Thai companies was being worked out regarding assurance of food security.

Qatar's wish to purchase agricultural land is totally unacceptable in Thailand because grain production is more of a culture than commodity, he said.

Chirapant added that if foreigners are allowed to purchase Thai agricultural land, Thailand would not have its own land under its supervision.

He said foreigners could own industrial and real estate lands in Thailand, but not farmland.
