France's wheat exports show increase

The volume of France's soft wheat exports for this season so far was 4% higher than in the same period in 2010/11.

French soft wheat export reached 1.55 million tonnes in August, bringing the total to 2.8 million tonnes since the start of the 2011/12 season on July 1, customs data showed on Tuesday (Oct 11).

Shipments outside the EU had reached 1.6 million tonnes by the end of August, a 5% increase on year. Algeria was the top destination with 941,318 tonnes of wheat shipped to the North African country.

Exports within the EU came out 1.2 million tonnes by end-August, up 4% on the year-earlier period.

French wheat exports have been widely expected to fall this season after a record volume shipped outside the EU in 2010/11, hit by a smaller wheat crop in France this year and the return of Russia to export markets after a grain embargo during most of 2010/11.

However, French wheat has seen strong early-season demand from traditional customers like Algeria.

In other grains, French barley exports fell 41% in July-August to 665,445 tonnes, with shipments outside the EU down by almost half at 157,853 tonnes.

Corn exports were down 18% at 443,442 tonnes, reflecting a 20% drop in shipments within the EU.

Exports to non-EU countries more than doubled, however, to 30,336 tonnes, the customs data showed.
