New feedlots to boost Australian live cattle exports

Australia could export up to one million head of cattle to Indonesia next year when three new feedlots are completed.

Exports of live cattle to Indonesia reached 700,000 head this year and the potential for a huge increase will present opportunities for cattle producers in Queensland and the Northern Territories.

The feedlots will boost beef prices and generate higher demand from the southern parts of Queensland, according to Zander McDonald, director of McDonald Holdings, which is one of Australia's largest private landholders.

He said a lot more cattle will be required to fill the market in Indonesia and this could benefit producers in south Queensland as Northern Territory and the north of the state would not be able to satisfy demand.
