EU's ban on Pakistan's seafood costs industry US$150 million

Pakistan's seafood industry has lost a total of US$150 million since January 2007, when the EU imposed its ban on the country's seafood on sanitary grounds.

The EU banned Pakistan's seafood as it deemed the fish processing units operating in Karachi Fish Harbour unsanitary.

It also criticised fisherman for not insulating boats used to catch fish and shrimps from the sea.

Authorities, who have been widely criticised for failing to respond to EU earlier warnings, are said to be implementing requisite measures to meet EU standards, according to local media.
