Russia raises concern over spiraling cost of livestock imported from Brazil

A significant spike in the prices of livestock that Brazil exports to Russia has alarmed Russia's veterinary watchdog, Rosselkhoznadzor.

Sergey Dankvert, head of Rosselkhoznadzor, has warned Brazil this could have an impact on trade between the two countries.

In the light of other major competitors such as India and China, cutting prices is what Brazil need to do, Dankvert said.

The lack of a "substantial increase" in exports to Russia despite the large number of Brazilian livestock products granted access to the market highlights this fact, he said.

Russia's concern has been relayed to Marcelo Ferraz, the Brazilian secretary for international relations in agribusiness

Following Russia's food embargo, announced in August, against imports from US and the EU in retaliation for the trade sanctions the imposed between Russia and Western nations, Rosselkhoznadzor reactivated approval for meat imports from Brazil on August 2014, with pork and beef imports among the key interests of Russia.

However, at the end of September, Rosselkhoznadzor has suspended 54 tonnes of poultry and beef imports over violations of veterinary regulations.
