Ukraine harvests 1.73 million tonnes corn to Oct 6, down 11 percent on-year

Ukraine harvested 1.73 million tonnes of corn to Oct 6 on 507,800 hectares, with an average yield of 3.41 tonnes a hectare, APK-Inform market analyst reported Monday (Oct 9), quoting a source in the agriculture ministry.

On the year-earlier date, the corn harvest was 1.94 million tonnes on 490,600 hectares with an average yield of 3.96 tonnes/hectare.

The agriculture ministry said Aug 17 that Ukraine's plans to harvest 8 million tonnes of corn this year had been disrupted by hot, dry weather, and this year's harvest was not likely to exceed 6-6.5 million tonnes.

In 2005, Ukraine's corn harvest fell by 1.7 million tonnes on year to 7.17 million tonnes.

This year, the corn planted area increased by 11 percent, compared with 2005, to 1.9 million hectares.
