India continues to gear up against bird flu

India has continued gearing up against bird flu, following a warning from the World Health Organization that the country was likely to be badly hit in the event of a pandemic.

The government said a high level meeting was considered to discuss the bird flu issue.

Meanwhile, the government considered preparing animal vaccines according to the strain of the virus, and to be alert especially with regard to mass deaths among birds. It also sought to create general awareness to contain public alarm over the disease.

Indian authorities concerned would also keep in regular contact with the WHO, local state governments, the environment ministry and other related agencies.

The government saw no immediate need for human vaccines against bird flu as no human-to-human transmissions were reported so far. However, anti-viral drugs have been reserved for an emergency.
