China, Uganda launch joint aquaculture project
The Chinese and Uganda governments have joined forces to build an agricultural technology demonstration centre at Uganda's Kajjansi Aquaculture Research and Development Centre.
Â
The centre will continue its research on new fish species, offer technical training and technical demonstration of highly effective freshwater aquaculture techniques.
Â
The centre is also designed to foster freshwater fry breeding techniques and demonstrate better fish feed processing and application, according to a report in the Ugandan Daily Monitor.
Â
China will introduce new fish species such as grass carp, silver carp and bighead carp to Uganda.
Â
According to Yi Ronggan, general manager of the project, blue tilapia will also be introduced for breeding and spawning. In addition, they will distribute all the species to farmers across Uganda.
Â
The project, being built by Sichuan Huaqiao Fenghuang Group and funded by the Chinese government, will also develop and promote large-scale breeding of the Nile perch, the main species in Uganda's waters.
Â
The project is one of the outcomes of the Sino-Africa Summit that marked 50 years of collaboration and cooperation between Africa and China.
