Russian farms quarantined due to African swine fever
Russia's emergencies ministry has put farms in the southern Rostov region under quarantine after an outbreak of African swine fever, the RIA Novosti news agency reports Wednesday (Oct 7).
The report says 24 pigs have been diagnosed with African swine fever since September 27, in a region where there are more than 6,700 hogs.
African swine fever is endemic in warthogs in southern and eastern Africa, and is spread to domestic pigs by ticks. There is no effective treatment or vaccine for the virus
