Australian beef exports to Russia reach two-year record
A new monthly record was set for Australian beef exports to Russia in September, with a total of 5,482 tonnes swt shipped - the highest volume since September 2008.
The two-year record is a result of high prices registered in the market as importers rush to fill their 2010 quota allocations, while supplies from South America remain scarce.
During the calendar year to September, exports to Russia jumped 148% to 28,435 tonnes swt as a result of the improvement in demand and the recovery of importers' financial situation from the 2008 crisis.
In addition, Brazil has been increasingly redirecting products to the Middle East, and Argentine supplies remain tight. However, shipments remain 57% lower when compared with 2008's surge.
The main Australian beef products exported to Russia in 2010 were silverside (34% of the total), thick flank (21%), chuck and blade (23%), and topside (10%).
