Philippines's Palawan gets fishery, aquaculture funding

The Philippines agriculture department has allocated an initial PHP5 million (US$115,000) for technical assistance to the fisheries and aquaculture sectors in Palawan, an official statement said Tuesday (Oct 5).

Specifically, the funding will go to the Department of Agriculture's Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources' Inland Sea Ranching Station (ISRS) in Sta. Lucia, Puerto Princesa City in Palawan. The ISRS conducts fisheries research and provides technical assistance to local fishermen.

Part of the fund will be used for ongoing projects such as marine fish broodstock development, multispecies marine fish hatchery, and fishpond development, the statement read further.

The projects will ensure the production and continuous supply of fish fry and fingerlings for fisherfolk engaged in aquaculture and marine fish production in Puerto Princesa, other parts of Palawan and nearby provinces in the region, the department added.
