Canadian 2005 wheat output expected to fall 1.2 percent

According to Statistics Canada, the country's 2005 wheat output was expected at 25.5 million tones, a fall of 1.2 percent from 25.86 million in 2004.

Spring wheat production was estimated at 18.1 million tonnes, down 1.6 percent year-on-year.

Statistics Canada said a delayed harvest and declining grain quality were becoming important issues for prairie grain farmers.

Canada tied with Australia for the world's second largest exporter of milling wheat, at about 14 percent of the global wheat market, the Canadian Wheat Board said. The US led at 26 percent.
