US turkey production down 8 percent
The total amount of turkeys raised in the US in 2009 is down 8 percent at 250 million birds, from the total number raised during the same period last year, figures from the Agricultural Statistics Service, Agricultural Statistics Board, US Department of Agriculture.
Six states are expected to account for about two-thirds of the turkeys produced in the US during 2009: Minnesota, at 45.5 million turkeys, is down 5 percent from 2008; North Carolina, at 37.5 million turkeys, is down 6 percent from 2008; Arkansas, at 28 million turkeys, is down 10 percent from 2008; Missouri, at 21 million turkeys, is unchanged from 2008; Virginia, at 16.4 million turkeys, is down 9 percent from 2008; and California, at 15 million turkeys, is down 6 percent from 2008.
