Australian beef production up 11 percent in August
Australian beef production was up 11 percent on-year for August to total 190,869 tonnes according to figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
However, beef production for the first eight months of 2006 remained unchanged from the same period in 2005, totalling 1.4 million tonnes.
Beef production in August was up across all states except the Northern Territories
and Tasmania.
Dry conditions have led to earlier and higher than usual cattle turn-off, especially in the southern states, the report noted.
August national average slaughter weights increased 3 percent to 277.2kg/head as a result of more cattle being turned off from feedlots.
Australian cattle slaughter increased 8 percent in August to 686,613 head, with slaughter in Queensland up 6 percent, to 361,518 head.
