*Commonly referred to in China as liquid methionine is methionine hydroxyl analogue, a liquid source of supplemental methionine.

Market analysis

Sales of methionine were disappointing while poultry products prices stayed weak. Feed millers who were preparing for the upcoming long holidays in early October were reluctant to stockpile high inventories of the product in anticipation of slack feed demand ahead.

During August, China imported 14,400 tonnes of methionine, lower by a whopping 16% on-month as local output expanded. Meanwhile, exports surged 144% to 2,020 tonnes.

In Europe, prices of methionine for Q4 deliveries remained at EUR2.80-2.83/kg, while spot prices were unchanged in the range of EUR2.90-3/kg.

Market forecast

Although one methionine producer is likely to cut production in October, methionine market will remain weak. With feed demand poised to stay sluggish during October and November, feed millers will withhold the procurements of ingredients including methionine.
