Japanese beef imports fall 13 percent in August 2005
 

Japanese beef imports in August totalled 35,630 tonnes, a 13 percent fall year-on-year and down 40 percent from July 2005. Of the total, imports of chilled and frozen beef were 18,540 tonnes and 17,090 tonnes respectively. The country imported 89 percent of its beef from Australia.

July¡¯s imports were significantly higher than that of August, as large volumes of beef entered Japan in July after shipments were delayed from June to avoid triggering the safeguard tariff.
