Brazil Sept soy exports reach 1.83 million tonnes
Brazil's soy exports hit 1.83 million tonnes in September, compared with 1.86 million tonnes in September 2008, the Foreign Trade Ministry said Thursday (Oct 1).
That put September soy exports below the 2.9 million tonnes exported in August, the ministry said.
Brazil is the world's second-largest soy exporter, behind the US, and soy is one of the biggest revenue drivers for Brazil.
The soy trade brought in US$817 million to Brazil in September, compared with $900 million in September 2008.
Exports remain slow in September as producers and buyers had already traded a large amount of beans in previous months.
Brazil is in the inter-harvest period for soy, and farmers are holding onto their soy to wait for higher prices.
Brazil in September also shipped 1.09 million tonnes of soymeal, a soy derivative used in animal feed and other food products, compared with 1.1 million tonnes in August and 1.09 million tonnes in September 2008.
