China's Hainan supplies 90% of its grouper to domestic markets

With her unique geographical location and climate, Hainan has an edge over grouper breeding and farming.

According to Executive Vice President of Hainan Providence Hainan Fish Breeding

Association and Chairman of Hainan Da Shunfa Aquaculture Limited, Li Ying Fen, 90% of Hainan's grouper produce is supplied to domestic markets; mainly Beijing, Shanghai and the Pearl River Delta region. Daily distribution volume is conservatively estimated at 100 tonnes.

With new improvements in grouper aquaculture technology, expansion of farming areas and development of new varieties, grouper prices are significantly lower than previous years, making it an affordable delicacy for the majority.

However, the prices for grouper in the first half of 2014 had been through a roller-coastal ride. Li attributed that to the imbalance in supply and demand.

Nonetheless, looking at the current market performance of grouper, it is believed that industry prices will remain stable from the period after National's Day to Spring Festival.
