Canadian Farm Group Condemns Beef Exports

A Canadian farm group leader in Montana has decried a resumption in Canadian beef exports to some countries, after a single incident of mad cow disease caused a U.S. ban on Canadian live cattle and products.

Del Styren, president of the Montana Farmers Union, said the U.S. Department of Agriculture's decision is premature. The agency recently announced it would allow imports of Canadian boxed beef made from cattle younger than 2-1/2 years of age.

Styren said U.S. consumers should be given the same assurances as Japanese and South Korean counterparts, who have said they will buy only beef made from U.S. cattle. This could damage the reputation and livelihood of Montana livestock producers, Styren said.
