India's wholesale egg to see increased consumption

India's wholesale egg prices may soon benefit from a rise in consumption as the observance of Vinayaka Chaturthi comes to a close in the North.

Egg prices touched a new high of INR3.65 (US$0.07) a piece on September 20; a slip owing to buyers' resistance and has been ruling at that level since then.

The National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC), Namakkal Zone, is planning to effect a steady rise in prices of poultry products.

"With the Vinayaka Chaturthi festivities drawing to a close in the North, a major market for our shell and broiler trade, we see a rise in consumption.

"Schools in the State are set to reopen soon and we will be able to clear up our piling stocks."

Moreover, considering the soaring input costs and rise in off take, we plan to raise the prices gradually," said P. Selvaraj, Chairman, NECC, Namakkal Zone.

Meanwhile, NECC has maintained the rates for layer birds at INR49 (US$0.93) per kilogramme price band for the past two weeks.

Palladam-based Broiler Coordination Committee has fixed the prices of live chicken at INR63 (US$1.19) per kilogramme.

Namakkal and Palladam are the benchmark of poultry prices in the country.
