Fonterra opens new milk powder plant

Dairy giant Fonterra has opened a new milk powder plant at Edendale in New Zealand's Southland.

The plant, which costs US$212 million, will be one of the largest in the world and will benefit South Island farmers.

It took 14 months to build and is one of three milk dryers on the Edendale site.

The plant was built in response to the steadily growing number of dairy farmers in the South Island, and will take the site's total processing capacity to over 15 million litres per day.

Complete with state of the art equipment, the plant will eventually be operated by only three people.

The plant will start shipping its produce worldwide by early October.
