In the first half-year of 2004, China's output of a few feed products increased favorably despite a generally lower feed production, compared with the first half-year of 2003. Production of feed for aquatic animals and ruminants enjoyed a healthy growth, as did that of complete feed for hogs. However, broiler and layer feed production fell, as well as the output of other feed types for hogs.

China's feed trade was boosted by higher exports and imports of lysine, compared with the same period in 2003, but remained lackluster with lower exports of corn, soymeal and fishmeal. Imports of all feed ingredients except lysine were also down.

Prices of feed products rose significantly in the same comparative period, including those of complete feed for fattening hogs, broilers and layers. The price increases were attributed to a surge in feed ingredients prices. The prices of all feed ingredients except methionine climbed sharply, compared with the first half-year of 2003.
