*Commonly referred to in China as liquid methionine is methionine hydroxyl analogue, a liquid source of supplemental methionine.

Market analysis

Methionine distributors and producers were less willing to lower price quotes, which have dropped 3% to 6% during Q3. However, they were still open to price negotiation of a case-by-case basis. Nonetheless, demand showed little improvement with egg sales decreased and the broiler market sluggish.

Meanwhile, NHU's new facilities in Shandong, with a capacity of 50,000 tonnes, have run its trial production and are expected to start producing commercially in October. The second phase of the methionine plant, similar in capacity, is scheduled to complete by March 2018.

In Europe, prices of methionine for Q4 deliveries were at EUR2.80-2.83/kg, while spot prices stayed in the range of EUR2.90-3/kg.

Although the demand for methionine increased about 5% globally, prices remained weak due to rapid expansion over the last few years, which resulted in excess supplies.

Market forecast

Methionine prices are expected to slide further with demand traditionally slack during Q4 due to low animal feed consumption. With the production capacity of the industry expanding and the confidence of feed millers low, the market is unlikely to firm up unless producers cut output prominently.
