China's Shandong forecasts higher 2010 grain output

The grain output in North China's Shandong province, one of the country's major grain producing bases, is to hit 43.5 million tonnes in 2010, scoring a new increase in grain output for eight consecutive years, a provincial authority said Thursday (Sep 21).

Teng Shaoming, an official with Planting Department of Shandong Agricultural Bureau, said some 52.75 million mu (about 3.52 million hectares) of autumn crops have been planted and grow well by now.

If no significant natural disasters occur, the harvest of the autumn crops could be expected, ensuring the considerable growth of grain output in the whole year, he added.

Statistics from the bureau show that the summer grain output reached 20.60 million tonnes in Shandong, up 0.6% on-year.
