Australia confiscates poultry meat suspected with bird flu

Australia's government said several tonnes of suspect poultry meat were confiscated in a bid to remain free from bird flu which has devastated nearby Asian countries.

The government did not provide details about which countries the suspect meat came from or the time period involved. But it added that customs and quarantine officials had received extra training to deal with the threat.

Australia also funded programmes in the region to detect early warning signs of bird flu, the government said.
