US cattle on feed numbers up 10 percent from 2005

Cattle and calves on feed for the US slaughter market on Sep 1, 2006 was 10 percent higher than that of the same period a year ago, reaching the highest level in 10 years.

11 million cattle were in feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head of cattle.

Placements in feedlots during August was 15 percent above 2005 and 9 percent above 2004.

Marketings of fed cattle during August totaled 2.08 million, 2 percent above 2005 and 8 percent above 2004.
