Oman relaxes import ban on eggs from India

Oman has relaxed a ban on egg imports from India, which was imposed after bird flu reports in March 2012.

With the lifting of the ban, the first shipments of eggs from India would be despatched to Oman on September 24.

Oman imposed a ban on the import of eggs from India on March based on the OIE (World Organisation for Animal Health) regulations after a bird flu outbreak in Orissa. The OIE declared that India was free from bird flu on September 15.

Oman represents 33% of the total egg export from India. Egg exports, which totalled at 55.73 million eggs in March, fell to 41.56 million in April.

Namakkal, a city in the state of Tamil Nadu, accounts for nearly 95% of the egg export from India, due to factors such as superior quality; competitive pricing; shorter delivery time due to easy accessibility to ports.
