"British Banger" supplies in jeopardy
British sausages, pork chops and bacon also known as "British Bangers" may face a supply shortage due to high production costs.
Farmers claim there has been a 30 percent increase in the cost of swine feed in the past year. They lamented they will be out of business if they are not allowed to pass on the costs.
According to producers, the industry is predicted to lose about GBP200 million (US$402.46 million) for the next 12 months and they are urging big supermarkets - which buys 70 percent of Britain's pork - to fork out more for their meat to ensure some profits.
Ian Campbell of the National Pig Association, said wheat has already reached GBP200 a tonne compared from last year's GBP70 per tonne.
Christopher Sheen, director of Musk's of Newmarket, which has had a Royal warrant since 1907, said: "The industry has been through a very difficult time recently and pig farmers are feeling the pinch. Pork is a staple part of the British diet and it would be a great shame if it lost its prime place at the dining table."
