India's chicken price up 35% on low supply, high feed costs

India's chicken price was retailing between INR140-150 (US$2.23-2.39) per kilogramme last week but has now rose nearly 35% at INR200/kilogramme (US$3.19).

Wholesalers attribute the rise to a drop in supply, bulk of which comes from Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan.

Officials say that the biggest reason for the hike in chicken prices is the rising price of soy, the main component of poultry feed.
