Merial launches new PCV2 vaccine in Europe

Merial officially launched its PCV2 vaccine Circovac at last week's agricultural show of SPACE 2007 in Rennes, France.

The vaccine had already obtained its European registration from the EMEA in June 2007 and could be launched in all EU member states from September 2007 to January 2008.

The product is an inactivated vaccine against Porcine Circovirus type 2 (PCV2), to be administered to sows and gilts.

Newborn piglets with a good colostrum uptake will also benefit from an effective specific passive protection against PCV2 infection.

Vaccination of sows and gilts would help the immune system of their piglets to mature in a correct and efficient way during their first weeks of life. Further on, piglets will be able to build properly their own PCV2 active immunity.

Due to the emergency situation regarding PMWS and PCV2 diseases in several countries, the  vaccine was granted special authorisations for more than two years by the authorities in France, Germany, Denmark, UK and Canada.
