Argentina completes wheat planting, conditions good

Argentine farmers wrapped up 2007-08 wheat planting this week, seeding 5.44 million hectares with the grain, the Agriculture Secretariat said in its weekly crop report Friday (September 21).

Crop conditions are generally good following a second weak of rainfall, although some spots of severe drought remain in the west of Santa Fe province, the Secretariat said.

Early corn planting stalled due to the rainfall over the past week, although the warm, moist conditions will favour the crop, the Secretariat said.

As of September 20, farmers had planted about 90,000 hectares, 2.26 percent of the forecast 3.95 million hectares.

As with corn, this week's rainfall stalled sunseed planting, but has improved conditions for the 2007/08 crop.

As of September 20, farmers had planted 10 percent of the 2.75 million hectares seen going to sunseeds this season, five percentage point behind the planting pace at this time last year, according to the secretariat.
