Salmonella pullorum spreads in Japan

Surveillance last month has found birds with Salmonella pullorum on four more farms in Japan's Kyoto prefecture.

The veterinary authority has sent Follow up Report no. 3 dated September 21 to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

One or more birds on each farm - 11 birds in total - were affected by pullorum disease, and all 43 birds that tested serologically positive to S. pullorum were destroyed.

Earlier, five farms in the Kyoto prefecture were affected, where a total of 2,675 birds were involved. Of these, eight showed symptoms and 385 that produced a positive result in serological tests were destroyed.
