Merial presents vaccine products for poultry disease prevention

Animal health company, Merial Asia, has presented its vaccination technology and services at the recent Indo Livestock 2013 which saw more than 8000 visitors.
Representing Merial, Dr Michael Lee, avian technical manager for Asia, discussed about avian metapneumovirus infection which is often known as avian rhinotracheitis or swollen head syndrome. While the disease is less severe in chicken as compared to turkey, it can cause significant losses in production especially when exacerbated by other factors like Newcastle disease, infectious bronchitis, poor ventilation and ammonia.
Dr. Lee also addressed that Avian metapneumovirus infection in birds, which are in lay, can result in a reduction of egg production. According to Dr Lee, this occurrence is often overlooked and can be misdiagnosed as infectious bronchitis. There are currently four subtypes identified serologically. Cross immunity exists between the subtypes.
In addition to good hygiene and flock management, Merial’s vaccine products, both live and killed types such as Nemovac and Gallimune 407 ND+IB+EDS+ART, can prevent disease infection, Dr Lee said.
