BIOMIN probiotic receives approval from EU

BIOMIN, a developer of animal nutrition products, has announced that its multi-species, host-specific probiotic is the first feed additive of its kind to achieve EU authorisation.

The European Food Safety Authority's (EFSA) has confirmed that the product is safe for animals, humans and the environment, and efficacious for use in target species.

The probiotic will be marketed in the EU under the company's successful PoultryStar® brand which is the result of long term multinational research and industrial partnerships. The brand provides a solution towards potential problems resulting from increased worldwide restrictions on in-feed antibiotics, such as a stronger occurrence of infectious poultry diseases, performance losses, food-borne diseases in humans, and the rising use of therapeutic antibiotics.

Developed to improve the microbial intestinal balance and gut health of poultry, the probiotic strains in PoultryStar® are isolated from the gut of healthy chickens, making them host-specific, safe and effective as feed additive for poultry. PoultryStar® strains were selected from different parts of the chicken intestinal tract to ensure their reproduction and colonisation throughout most of the gut. The product promotes beneficial gut microflora in day-old chicks and birds of all ages, thus boosting their resistant to pathogens.

"Several feeding trials worldwide have already confirmed the efficacy of PoultryStar® in alleviating a wide range of pathogenic conditions such as coccidiosis, necrotic enteritis, bacterial lameness and salmonellosis, in addition to improving performance parameters, " said Michaela Mohnl, the director of Competence Center Microbials.

The PoultryStar® has been well-received recently at the 18th World Veterinary Poultry Association Congress in France and the 19th European Symposium on Poultry Nutrition in Germany.
