In the first eight months of this year, Russian farms produced 6.6 million tonnes of meat in live weight and 22.7 million tonnes of milk, up 8.8% and 2.4% on-year, respectively.
The Agriculture Ministry reported late September 14 that livestock production for slaughter rose 1.6% on-year in this period, pigs 7.4%, while sheep and goats for slaughter fell 1.3%.
The average milk production per cow rose 6.5% while egg production went up 2.8% to 28.8 billion units in January–August, the ministry said.
As of September 1, the number of livestock in Russia rose 1.2% compared to September 1, 2011, to 21.1 million heads, while the number of milk cows grew 2.2% to 9.1 million heads. The number of pigs rose 4.6% to 19.6 million heads, while the number of sheep and goats increased 7% to 26.6 million heads.
